A Trip Down History Lane (Facts About Queen Elizabeth I)

Virtually everyone has heard of the name Queen Elizabeth, this being because she made the history books. In this post, I'll be sharing some interesting facts about her.

It's fun when we go back in time once in a while, I'm certain many of us have heard about this queen of England but only a few of us have knowledge of her achievements, here a few facts about Queen Elizabeth I;

  • Queen Elizabeth I was birthed 7th September, 1533 and died 24th March, 1603.

  • She ruled and governed England for 44 years with relative stability and prosperity.

  • She was only two years old when her mother, Anne Boleyn was beheaded.

  • Elizabeth was declared illegitimate as her father sought to pave the way for a male heir, but was later reinstated as a potential heir.

  • Elizabeth was imprisoned by her step sister Mary, who became queen, in the year 1554, for a rebellion organized against Mary, instigated by Thomas Wyatt.

  • In 1558, Elizabeth took the reigns of her country after the demise of her sister.

  • She cultivated her image as a queen married to her job and her people. For this dedication she earned the nickname the 'Virgin Queen'.

  • She loved music and could play the lute.

  • Arts flourished during her time and many writers paid tribute to her in many literary forms. The poet Edmund Spenser based his character of Gloriana in the Faerie Queen on Elizabeth.

  • She loved fashion and unfortunately, her cosmetic concoction, called the spirits of Saturn, made by mixing white lead and vinegar, may have impacted on her health.

  • In 1601, she gave what was referred to as her 'Golden Speech.' She said; "Of myself I must say this, I was never any greedy scraping grasper, nor a strait, fast-holding prince, nor yet a waster. My heart was never set on worldly goods but for my subjects' good."

  • She died two years later in 1603, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Things to note: Although life wasn't all that favorable for Elizabeth she still rose to become a great ruler and a queen.
